We make grants to organizations and programmes in the global south and in the emerging economies of Central and Eastern Europe. Our aim is to strengthen community foundations and other local philanthropic institutions. By doing so, we hope to show that this emerging but important global movement has a big part to play in sustainable development, poverty alleviation, and citizen participation.
Most grants are awarded through an open competitive process, although we also take a role in initiating projects and inviting applications in accordance with our strategic objectives. All funding decisions are informed by regional advisers and are finally approved by our board of trustees.
We provide one-year grants up to an amount of US $50,000 (although most grants are in the range of US $5,000–$30,000) to emerging and more-established community foundations, philanthropy support organizations and community foundation networks and associations.
Grant programmes in 2012
We do not currently have an open call for letters of intent for grants in 2012. We will be inviting applications for grants on particular issues and for particular geographic regions in the coming months but – because of limited grant funds and out of a desire to target specific areas – this will be through a targeted call
Grants programme 2010 – Community Foundations and Youth Civic Engagement
In 2010, we targeted our grants specifically towards community foundations working on issues around youth civic engagement. This work will continue in 2011 as we start to work with the cohort of successful applicants.
You can see these grants, and those for previous years, here.
About our grantmaking process
Applicants are first invited to submit a preliminary letter of intent of no more than three pages by e-mail to info@globalfundcf.org. We will then determine basic eligibility and will be ready to provide technical advice on the proposed activities. The letter of intent should include:
- contact information
- mission, primary activities and annual budget of the organization
- details of the area and population served (for a community foundation) or of the area and organizations served (for a support organization)
- description and rationale for proposed grant-funded activities and anticipated outcomes
- grant amount requested
- timing/duration of the proposed activity
Please read the section on our current grantmaking programmes, eligibility and selection criteria, as well as the Frequently asked questions. The focus of our funding is very specific: we do not make grants to NGOs for direct implementation of projects.
If the letter of intent satisfies our criteria, we will send applicants an application form for completion. We are currently able to accept applications only in English.
